Tung Pledges Religious Freedom In
Hong Kong

"My government will preserve the freedom of religion," stressed Hong Kong's new chief executive, Tung Chee-hwa, as he greeted the Ninth Assembly of the Lutheran World Federation. Tung told the Assembly of the pride and confidence in Hong Kong as it celebrated its reunification with China on July 1.

"For the first time in our history, Hong Kong people took on the solemn responsibility of managing our own affairs," he said. "The smooth and peaceful handover of the territory represents a new testament to the vision and ingenuity of the architects of the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong.
